Après la Deuxième Guerre Mondiale, Laurent Matagne (17 ans) est envoyé en internat par sa mère devenue veuve. Parmi ses professeurs, Laurent croit discerner sous l’identité de son professeur de français surnommé "Vapeur", son père mort durant cette guerre. Vapeur est excentrique, mystérieux, brillant et affiche des ressemblances troublantes par rapport à ce que Laurent connaît de son père. En même temps qu’il tentera de vérifier son pressentiment, Laurent se révèlera être un jeune auteur prometteur à qui "Vapeur" aura transmis sa passion pour la littérature. Le rôle du père dans le développement de l’identité d’un adolescent prend tout son sens dans ce contexte de reconstruction d’après-guerre. Un duo d’acteur brillant qui nous laisse dans l’incertitude constante de la relation qui unit les deux personnages.

Tien jaar na de Tweede Wereldoorlog wordt Laurent Matagne (17 jaar) door zijn moeder, die weduwe is geworden, op internaat gestuurd. In zijn leraar Frans, bijgenaamd ‘Vapeur’ meent Laurent zijn vader te herkennen die officieel gesneuveld is in de oorlog. Vapeur is excentriek, mysterieus, briljant, en vertoont opmerkelijk veel gelijkenissen met wat Laurent over zijn vader weet. Terwijl hij op onderzoek gaat om zijn voorgevoel uit te pluizen, wordt Laurent geprikkeld door Vapeurs passie voor literatuur en ontpopt hij zich tot een beloftevolle jonge schrijver. De rol van de vader in de identiteitsontwikkeling van een adolescent is betekenisvol gesitueerd in de context van de naoorlogse wederopbouw. Het erg op elkaar ingespeelde acteursduo laat ons de hele tijd in onzekerheid over de werkelijke relatie tussen de twee personages.

After World War II and the death of his father, Laurent Matagne (17 years old) is sent to a boarding school. Laurent believes to recognize his father, presumed dead during the war, in his French professor “Vapeur”. Vapeur is an eccentric, mysterious, and brilliant man but he bears disturbing resemblances to Laurent‘s father. While Laurent tries to verify his presumption, he will prove to be a promising young author to whom “Vapeur” passes on his passion for litterature. The role of the father in construction of the teenager’s identity makes sense in this context of post-war reconstruction. The brilliant duo of actors keeps the real nature of their relationship uncertain.
