Sri Lanka. Les taudis. Manoj et Stanley tentent tout pour obtenir un visa pour aller en Europe. À chaque fois, leur demande est refusée. Ils sont complètement découragés. Ils apprennent que l’Allemagne invite des équipes de handball pour un tournoi en Bavaria. Manoj et Stanley n'hésitent pas: ils créent une équipe fictive de handball. Même s’ils ne connaissent pas les règles du jeu, ils commencent à former une équipe et font une demande de participation.
Machan (‘Camarade’, ‘Frère’, un titre entre deux hommes de la même classe sociale) est un film drôle et touchant. Le film, parfois proche du documentaire, suit plusieurs personnages, et parvient à faire un portrait complexe et détaillé de chaque personnage. Machan est basé sur une histoire vraie: en 2004, l’équipe entière de handball de Sri Lanka disparaît pendant un tournoi en Allemagne. Ceci est le premier long-métrage d’Uberto Pasolini, producteur de The Full Monty.
