Awaydays décrit l'une des périodes les plus fascinantes de l’Angleterre en matière de musique et de culture des jeunes: le mouvement post punk, à la fin des années 70. La période Berlinoise de Bowie, Talking Heads, Wire, Ultravox, etc. Le spectateur est gâté par une grande sélection de musique de l’époque. Paul Carty, 19 ans, travaille dans un bureau et vit dans une banlieue paisible. Il s'ennuie mortellement. Carty est fasciné par le gang "The Pack", reconnaissable par leur coiffure androgyne, polos de tennis Lacoste, jeans serrés et baskets Adidas. Carty va alors rencontrer Elvis, l’un des membres, qui l’introduit au sein du gang... Le personnage d’Elvis traduit bien le mélange de désillusion et de révolte présent chez les jeunes au début « des années Thatcher ». En même temps le public ressent l’ambiance excitante de l’époque: la sensation de faire partie d’une nouvelle génération, d’un nouveau style.

Awaydays is een schets van een van de meest fascinerende periodes in Engeland op het vlak van muziek en jeugdcultuur: postpunk, eind jaren ‘70. De Berlijn-periode van Bowie, Talking Heads, Wire, Ultravox, Human League, etc. De toeschouwer wordt getrakteerd op een uitgebreide selectie van muziek uit die tijd. Paul Carty, 19 jaar, werkt op een kantoor en woont in een gezapige buitenwijk. In deze veilige omgeving verveelt hij zich stierlijk. Carty is gefascineerd door de bende ‘The Pack’: deze is herkenbaar aan de androgyne haarstijl, Lacoste tennisshirts, strakke jeans en Adidas sportschoenen. Carty ontmoet bendelid Elvis en zo wordt hij geïntroduceerd in The Pack... Aan de ene kant toont de film de desillusie en rusteloosheid bij de jeugd in het begin van de Thatcherjaren (in de figuur van Elvis). Aan de andere kant krijgt de toeschouwer de opwindende sfeer mee van die periode: het gevoel deel uit te maken van een nieuwe generatie, een nieuwe stijl.

Awaydays describes one of the most fascinating periods in England concerning music and youth mouvements: post-punk in the late 70s. The Berlin-period of Bowie, Talking Heads, Wire, Ultravox, Human League, etc. The audience hears an extensive music selection from that time. Paul Carty, 19 years, works in an office and lives in a nice quiet suburb. In this safe environment, he’s bored to tears. Carty is fascinated by the gang 'The Pack': they are recognizable by the androgynous hairstyle, Lacoste tennis shirts, tight jeans and Adidas trainers. Carty meets gang member Elvis, who introduces him into The Pack ... On the one hand, Elvis’ character shows well the disillusionment and revolted attitude among young people in the beginning of the Thatcher years. On the other hand, the audience gets a sense of the exciting atmosphere of that period: the feeling of being part of a new generation, a new style.
