Yacine a quitté la banlieue pour vivre à Paris. D’emplois en amours précaires, il refuse de s’installer dans la ville (il vit dans une caravane) et dans la vie. Il aborde le monde avec insouciance et rêve d’une autre vie. Alors serveur à la soupe populaire, le trentenaire tombe sur un ami d’enfance et se retrouve confronté à son passé, ses origines et ses frustrations. Une nuit d’amour avec un mannequin, un retour fugace dans sa cité natale, et c’est à Tolède que Yacine finira par se trouver.

Dans ce second film (après L’afrance) Alain Gomis aborde avec sincérité la question de l’identité et de l’intégration. Calant le rythme du film sur les aventures de son personnage principal, il pose un regard décalé – parfois esthétisant - empreint d’une liberté poétique sur la ville et ses coutumes. Un « film de cité », aux accents de documentaire, qui dépasse les habituels clichés et fait la part belle au comédien Samir Guesmi.

Yacine heeft de banlieue verlaten om in Parijs te gaan wonen. Hij wisselt regelmatig van baan (én van vrouw), woont in een aftandse caravan en leeft van dag tot dag. Hij droomt van een ander bestaan, maar maakt zich weinig zorgen. Tijdens een soepbedeling ontmoet de dertiger een jeugdvriend en wordt geconfronteerd met zijn verleden, zijn achtergrond en zijn frustraties. Hij beleeft een liefdesnacht met een model, keert even terug naar zijn geboortestad, om uiteindelijk in Toledo zichzelf te vinden.

Regisseur Alain Gomis benadert in deze tweede film (na L’afrance) op aangrijpende wijze het identiteitsthema en de integratiekwestie. Het ritme van de film houdt gelijke tred met de levenswandel van zijn hoofdpersonage en geeft een esthetiserende en poëtische visie op het leven in de stad. Een « cité » film met documentaire tinten die naar een hoger niveau geheven wordt door de uitzonderlijke vertolking van hoofdrolspeler Samir Guesmi.

Yacine has left the suburbs to go and live in Paris. Installing himself in a caravan and changing job regularly, he lives from one day to the next. He takes life as it comes, always dreaming of a better existence. Working as a waiter, he chances upon a childhood friend and comes face to face with his past, his roots and all of his frustrations. After a night of love spent with a model, he returns to the city of his birth and it’s there in Toledo that Yacine finally finds himself.

In his second film (after L’afrance) Alain Gomis casts a sincerely-felt look at the notion of identity and integration. Basing the rhythm of the film on the aimless wanderings of its main character, he offers a poetic view of the city and its customs. A « city film », with a touch of the documentary, that goes beyond the usual clichés, thanks to the exceptional performance of its lead actor Samir Guesmi.
